Electronics: Uniden Scanners

June 19, 2008 – 12:26 pm

These days, it is not uncommon to go to the NASCAR racetrack and see more people with scanners, or similar products, than without. Scanner is the technical name for the headphones that viewers of car races use to get inside information from on the track, on the sidelines, and in the broadcast booth. It seems that scanners have become an almost necessary accessory when watching a race.

Considering the ubiquity of these headphones at races, fans must be listening to something of great interest. So, what are scanners, exactly, and why are they so popular? Lets examine some of the different sides of the equation, for there are a number of reasons why fans choose to don headsets. In every case, these headsets are a window into the communication that matters during race time.

Gaining Access to the Inside Track
The scanners that are worn by race fans expose fascinating information to viewers who sit on the sidelines. Viewers who used to get by on watching what was happening can now hear what is happening, gaining insight into how things are done and why. These headphones allow the listener to enter into a world of goings on that are at once distant and nearby. A different language is spoken; everything that is said matters; the race track becomes the only arena.

Scanners help the audience of a race get closer to the action. The audience members, wearing scanners, can almost feel as though they are participating in the race. When it comes time for decision making, audience members are within earshot. Those with scanners get to hear about everything that is happening when it happens rather than waiting to be told about it later.

Inside the Race
This sense of immediate understanding is a gift that only scanners can bring to the audience. It is almost as if you, as a viewer, are brought down to the racetrack and placed right beside a driver. You gain instantaneous access to everything the driver hears.

This sense of knowing what is going on throughout the race can truly bring a new sense of enthusiasm to the sport. When viewers have an inside scoop on what is happening during the race, it becomes more tangible. The audience has a chance to become more closely involved in the details of the race.

Know Whats Happening
Understanding what is going on in a sport always makes for enhanced excitement. It is hard to have an interest in something that you dont understand. Scanners bring you into the sport as closely as possible so that you can see every move as it is played out. If a drivers having trouble with his car and communicates that information to his pit crew, youll hear it, and be able to see how that trouble affects how he drives.

Using scanners, listeners have access to conversations between the driver and those who help make the race happen. These people include the crew chief and the spotter and, in some cases, other drivers. This involved viewing of the race makes for a truly interesting sport in which the audience knows, in real time, what decisions are being made. Now, if you see a driver make a move, you will have known it was coming because the word clear was spoken on the scanner. All details of the race can be better understood by you, the viewer.
